The exact origin of the Bernese Mountain Dog breed is unknown. It is believed that their origins lie in the Swiss mountains, where they were used as farm dogs. This dog breed is large in size, hardy in build and calm in nature. The Bernese Mountain Dog is ideal for pulling carts, herding cattle and as a farmer’s companion. Bernese Mountain Dogs are a highly versatile breed.
Bernese Mountain Dog Characteristics
This dog breed is commonly referred to as the “Berner”. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a wonderful breed with many outstanding qualities. This dog breed is strong, agile and exceedingly intelligent. Their gentle manner and stunning appearance has contributed to the breed’s growing popularity. There are few breeds that can compete with the Bernese Mountain Dog’s striking appearance, work ethic and delightful nature.
Bernese Mountain Dog Temperament
This dog breed is tolerant, sweet and gentle by nature. They are typically excellent with children. However, since they are a large breed, they should never be left unsupervised with small children. This dog breed thrives on human companionship and interaction and may develop behavioral problems if deprived of social interaction. The Berner is protective, but not aggressive, unless threatened or provoked. They may be distant towards strangers and have a tendency to be shy. This dog breed is a devoted indoor member of the household and an enthusiastic outdoor aide.
Bernese Mountain Dog Care
This dog breed requires daily brushing and extra care during their heavy seasonal shedding. An occasional bath or dry shampooing is recommended. The Bernese Mountain Dog is a hardy breed, but is prone to elbow or hip dysplasia, cancer, bloat and eyelid problems. Their size and thick coat make them highly susceptible to heat stroke.
Bernese Mountain Dog Coat
This breed has a stunning weather-resistant, tri-colored double coat. The coat of the Berner is black with symmetrical markings of white and rust. It is moderate in length and either slightly wavy or straight, and very thick with a bright natural sheen. This breed is a heavy seasonal shedder.
Bernese Mountain Dog Training
This dog breed benefits from early socialization and basic obedience training. Bernese Mountain Dogs are extremely sensitive and do not respond well to harsh or heavy-handed training methods. All training should be done with constructive techniques, such as respect, reward, love, fairness, and consistency. The Bernese Mountain Dog excels at conformation, obedience, tracking, herding and agility events.
Bernese Mountain Dog Activity
The dog breed requires an inordinate amount of exercise and interaction. At a minimum, the Berner needs a half hour of vigorous, daily exercise. This breed is not recommended for apartment dwelling. A securely fenced large yard with room to run and play is best.
