Dogue De Bordeaux Overview
This is a fearless, powerful and imposing dog breed. The Dogue de Bordeaux is one of the most ancient French breeds. This breed is extremely muscular with a harmonious temperament. The Dogue De Bordeaux has been utilized in many different forms, from using their brawn to pull carts or haul heavy objects, to guarding flocks and protecting the castles of the European elite. This breed is also called French Mastiff or Bordeaux Bulldog.
Dogue De Bordeaux Characteristics
This dog breed is lower to the ground than it is long. The breed is well muscled and stocky with a heavy, broad head with lots of wrinkles. The eyes are oval shaped and have prominent upper ridges. These are well-balanced, muscular and massive dogs with a powerful build. The body of this dog is thickset, with a short, straight top-line and a gentle rounded croup. The front legs are straight and heavy-boned. The straight tail begins thickly at the base and then tapers to a point at the end. It should not reach lower than the hocks. The tail is thick at the base and tapers to the tip and is set and carried low. The eyes are oval shaped and have prominent upper ridges.
Dogue De Bordeaux Temperament
This dog breed is even-tempered and protective by nature. This dog is vigilant, but not aggressive. This breed becomes extremely attached and devoted to their family. The Dogue De Bordeaux is calm and balanced with high stimulus thresholds. This breed is highly intelligent, but does have stubborn, arrogant and dominant tendencies. Early socialization is essential for the Dogue De Bordeaux. This breed generally gets along well with children, but due to their size, the dog should always be supervised.
Dogue De Bordeaux Care
This dog breed requires little to no maintenance. An occasional brush or wipe down with a dry towel to remove excess hair normally suffices for this dog. This breed is an average shedder. They are prone to dysplasia, weak cruciates and spinal problems.
Dogue De Bordeaux Coat
The coat of this dog breed is solid gold, fawn or mahogany and should be different than the black or red mask it has. The hair of this breed is short and soft.
Dogue De Bordeaux Training
This dog breed is extremely devoted, obedient and keen to please. They require a dominant trainer as they are fearless, large and courageous dogs. This breed does well at obedience, working, and watch dog sports.
Dogue De Bordeaux Activity
This dog breed requires a fair amount of exercise and is best suited to an active owner. A large yard is preferable, but this dog breed adapts reasonably well to apartment or city living, provided they are sufficiently exercised. This breed enjoys long walks but does tend to tire quickly due to their short muzzle and water should always beon hand.
