English Springer Spaniel Overview
The English Springer Spaniel is another field hunting breed that gets its name from its “Springing” action of hunting. They were bred to flush game out of cover for hunters. Springers are the largest of this group of dog, with Field Spaniels and Cocker Spaniels being two smaller sizes of similar dog. Springers are a high energy, active, and playful companion.
English Springer Spaniel Characteristics
English Springer Spaniels make great family companions and love to go on outings with their humans. They are prolific swimmers and opt to swim in anything water-like including mud puddles. They make loving and loyal companions for children and their active and intelligent nature makes them sweet and smart dogs.
English Springer Spaniel Temperament
English Springer Spaniels, while active, are calm, loving and mild-mannered dogs. They do well with children and families due to their affectionate temperaments and nature. They, however, can bond too closely with their owners and thus experience separation anxiety when left alone.
English Springer Spaniel Care
A lifespan of 12-14 years is average for the breed and size of the dog. Springers are prone to some genetic disorders such as phosphofructokinase deficiency and progressive retinal atrophy. Seizures and hip dysplasia can also be genetically passed along breeding lines. The long droopy ears of the Springer Spaniel may also be more prone to infection, especially if the dog has been in the water.
English Springer Spaniel Coat
The English Springer Spaniel sports a longer, feathery coat, similar to other Spaniels and Setters. The coat requires frequent brushing and bathing to keep clean and free of burrs or other debris. The feathered areas of their ears and legs are prone to knotting and matting and so should be checked regularly and groomed as needed.
English Springer Spaniel Training
Springers are intelligent and loyal pets and quickly learn basic obedience commands. Their lineage as a hunting and sporting breed make them ideal for active sports and hunting activities. The calm temperament and eager to please nature makes English Springer Spaniels easy to train.
English Springer Spaniel Activity
Due to their hunting background, Springer Spaniels can be more active. They enjoy playing in the water, or running and hunting in fields. They make good walking and jogging partners for more active people, or for families. Inside the home, their calm, family-oriented nature makes for an easily adjusted pet, if properly exercised.
