They have been one of the most versatile dogs in history. They were easily able to work as retrievers while still being loyal, stylish and dignified companions. They both come from the Standard Poodle, bred down to their current smaller size. All three types are judged by the same breed standards.

Miniature and Toy Poodle Characteristics

The Poodle is lively and active and most well-known for its coat. While the common idea of the breed is the stylish cut with pom-poms and various shaved coat all over the body, the most common cut for them is a puppy cut that keeps the fur shaggy and puppy-like. This breed is also loved for the fact that its coat is hair based rather than fur, making it less allergenic.

Miniature and Toy Poodle Temperament

They are very sweet, clever dogs that are devoted companions. They are good natured, but may be shy and reserved around stranger. They do best in families with older children, however can do well as social pets if socialized from an early age. Minis and Toys are also known to bark frequently.

They live on average 10 to 15 years, typical for smaller sized dogs. A list of health concerns include epilepsy, progressive retinal atrophy, Von Willebrand’s disease, skin issues, patellar luxation, hip dysplasia and Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. Careful breeding and good veterinary care can help reduce incidence of disease.

The coat is naturally curly and dense and is practically non-shedding. However, it should be trimmed or clipped every few months to prevent matting. Brushing regularly will also keep the hair soft and from becoming dense and matted.

Poodles are extremely intelligent and Minis and Toys are no exception. They will easily pick up on any task and are willing and eager to please. Gentle, positive reinforcement training is key to a happy, intelligent Poodle.

Daily walks, exercise and any activities with the family are perfect for them. They are happiest as long as they are with their family and kept active and the center of attention. Tasks that challenge mind and body together are great fun for the Poodle.
