Things you need to know before bringing home a new puppy

I think this is a day that you expected so much! You were thinking about it since you were a little kid. Maybe your parents weren’t too much about puppies or they didn’t want to take this responsibility as they were very busy. But finally the day you dreamed about came.

There are some things that have to be prepared before bringing home a new puppy. And you have to do them right, so that your dog may feel as comfortable as possible from the very first moment he steps into your house.

There are some things that you have to buy before. Provide him a soft and comfortable bed, some very interesting toys, the bowl for food and water, very tasty and healthy food and treats, a collar, a leash, a crate and maybe some fencing if you don’t want your dog to bust your entire house.

On the way home, if you have someone that can drive you, it would be great if you could keep him on your lap. As he has changed the place and maybe he never traveled by car before, he might be frightened. Keep him next to you, talk to him, comfort him and make him feel that he can have confidence in you. This short ride of bringing home a new puppy might mean a very important beginning in your relationship. In these moments when he feels a lot of fear and insecurity, he will understand that there is someone there for him, and a very strong bond between the two of you will be formed, as he doesn’t know anyone else who can provide him the security he needs in this new world that he will have to discover.

Bringing home a new puppy has to start with the appropriate training. The first and the most important is potty training. He has to know where he is allowed to eliminate as soon as he enters your house. Don’t let him do anything else before potty. Be persistent and establish some rules that you and he can follow all the time. Don’t change your mind if you say something and don’t let your dog to dominate you. Dogs have a tendency to make you do what they want you to do. If you show a weakness from the very beginning, it will be quite hard to show him who is the leader in this house later on. So be categorical from the first day.

As you start any training you want, remember: always reward your dog if he does what you ask him to do. He will love that and this way you can encourage him to repeat these good actions he started to get used to. You can do anything you want with your dog if you provide him the treats he needs and if you give him the love and comfort that every dog has to feel.

This way, bringing home a new puppy can be one of the best experiences of your life. Do you have a dog already?
