Wire Fox Terrier Overview
Fox Terriers are an old English breed that has been used by fox hunters for centuries. They were compact, energetic and bold, relying on instinct rather than a direction to go after their prey. The breed was divided into two distinctions by coat, wire and smooth. While the two have the same name, it is believed that the two coat types actually have very different backgrounds.
Wire Fox Terrier Characteristics
This dog breed looks very much like a cross between the Smooth and other terrier types such as an Airedale. They have the stout body and long legs combined with the narrow snout of the Smooth Fox Terrier, yet have the wiry hair with curled leg hair and long beard of other wire coated terriers.
Wire Fox Terrier Temperament
Like other terriers, the Wire is very outgoing, energetic and self-confident. They are a sturdy, happy pet great for families that are as active as they are. Friendly with strangers, they may still exhibit a protective streak if they feel their family is threatened. The dog breed also needs socialization if he is to be around other dogs, however, he should not be unsupervised around small pets.
Wire Fox Terrier Care
On average, the Wire Fox Terrier lives 12 to15 years, good for their small size. Health concerns may include cataracts, glaucoma, distichiasis (abnormal eyelash growth), lens luxation, deafness, Legg-Calve-Perthes disease and skin allergies. Care and treatment of these conditions can help the Wire Fox Terrier to live a long and happy life.
Wire Fox Terrier Coat
Their coat does require professional grooming several times per year. This includes hand-stripping and trimming. However, outside of these times, the coat sheds very little and only needs occasional brushing, making them a relatively easy keeper.
Wire Fox Terrier Training
They can sometimes be a handful to train due to their heritage as an independent thinker. They can easily become bored or distracted and do best with short, focused sessions. Positive reinforcement as well as motivation to be interested in training will help ease the process.
Wire Fox Terrier Activity
Daily exercise and exploration outdoors are important to the mental and physical health of this dog breed. He also enjoys spending time with his family, and will happily tag along on whatever adventure is at hand. Lots of exercise and mental stimulation will help prevent him from becoming bored and destructive.
